A story for strength within beauty: day 16, counting the days of the Omer

Rabbi Jill

Counting the days, preparing our souls. Tonight and tomorrow (day 16 – april 11) we explore Strength/Discipline within the quality of Beauty/Balance (gevurah within tiferet) A story: I remember discovering this wonderful book by Alexandra Stoddard called “Living a Beautiful Life.” Here I was, a young mom with a messy, busy house, and I was so attracted to the beauty she created in the rooms of her home: ordered, color-coordinated, peaceful.

I yearned for a home that felt like that….Part of me thought – yeah right, not achievable. And then I realized that she was really teaching how to pay attention to one small thing and create order right there: a corner of a room, a small row of books on a shelf, a tiny flower arrangement on the counter. And suddenly, amidst the mess of everyday life, there was beauty. It took a bit of discipline to create that bit of beauty – but it was radiant far beyond the effort.

A wonderful reminder for today (April 11) – what small corner of beauty can I be disciplined enough to pay attention to and create? (these baby purple artichokes are from the farmers market – sitting in a beautiful green bowl our son made for us- on a counter that is still messy 🙂 but it’s a bright spot and brings a smile to my face….)
