My Legs Were Praying: A Call for This Moment

In 1965, Abraham Joshua Heschel marched from Selma to Montgomery alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Afterward, he said: “I felt my legs were praying.” Judaism has always held two truths at once — that stillness and prayer prepare us, and that at some point, we must rise and move. The prophets knew this. This is what this moment demands. Where is your Selma?

Blessing For Those Who Stand Up

Bless you for facing the darkness and bringing light, for choosing kindness and reaching out to others who are suffering… Bless you for taking breaks, practicing necessary self-care, and trusting that others in the far-flung community of righteous souls will carry the burden while you rejuvenate.

To Those Who Are Brave–We Remember You

This is a time of great extremes – there are people who cower in the corner instead of speaking up, while others shine a great light with their bravery in standing up for justice. When despair grips us, it’s helpful to remember people who speak the truth and take courageous action, regardless of the consequences. These often ordinary people act because their conscience compels them.

Prayers Alone Are Not Enough

Prayers alone didn’t get us out of Egypt. No, we stood up and walked out of Egypt… Change comes when we move, act, rise up, stand up. Our country must take action against the gun epidemic.
